HVAC Preventative Maintenance Programs are Good Business

Why HVAC Preventative Maintenance Programs are Good for your Business

by Jessica DelBalzo

Whether you are installing a fresh heating or cooling unit or performing repairs for a new customer, offering a preventative maintenance plan can provide a significant value to your client, as well as promote repeat business.

By setting up an affordably priced plan, you can give your homeowners the comfort and security that comes with knowing that their furnace and air conditioning unit will be in good working order when they are most in need. Your HVAC company can also afford to offer discounts to maintenance customers, allowing them to save money if a repair or replacement is needed.

Though preventative maintenance programs are individually designed by the contractors who offer them, a typical plan includes two “check-ups” per year. The first takes place in the autumn to verify that the furnace is ready to go before the cold weather arrives. The second is performed in the spring to make sure that the air conditioning unit is in working order before the temperatures rise.

If your company has never offered a preventative maintenance agreement in the past, you’ll want to take some time to consider what types of service to include in your program. Safety and performance evaluations are a must, and lubrication is also recommended. Overall heating and cooling operations should be tested to ensure that the units are performing in peak condition. Finally, cleanliness should be considered to make sure that dirt, mold, and other particles aren’t bogging down the system.
As an incentive for your clients, a good maintenance agreement should include discounts on any needed services. Even a 20% discount can be incredibly valuable to a customer whose unit needs parts or repairs.

The best time to offer a worry-free maintenance plan for heating and cooling systems is when a new system is installed. Clients are motivated to keep their new furnace or air conditioner in top condition. However, customers with older heaters or a/c units will also appreciate the opportunity to prevent unexpected breakdowns and make sure that their systems are operating efficiently.

Create a solid plan and encourage your technicians to promote it when making service calls or installations. Your bottom line will be glad you did!
